Protein bars

So a lot of physically fit people eat protein bars. They’re great for breakfasts or after workouts – or during workouts, who knows? This week, a bunch of sales reps from southern California came into our office to meet with us. At dinner one evening, I started talking with a rep who was totally into exercising so naturally we started talking about food. I’m new to this running stuff and I’ve not quite delved into the nutrition aspect yet. I’m getting there.

Anyway, she mentioned how she eats a protein bar for breakfasts. She recommended Quest protein bars. OK great – I’ll try some of those the next time I’m out. The next morning she gave one to me to try.

Quest bar

Apple Pie. Can’t go wrong. It has 20 grams of protein, some fiber – it’s all good, right?  Now remember – I’m new at all this.  I opened the package and this is what I found.

Quest bar on the insideUmm…It’s kind of sticky, shiny and looks like a big blob of – I don’t really know what. But – it’s flexible. Hey – it’s all good – you can bend it. Here’s a close up.

Quest bar - in real lifeJust looking at it, it kind of reminded me of what we were taught the Civil War era soldiers would eat: hard tack. Only this is chewy, so it’s kind of like chewy tack.

Given all that though and considering the way it looked – it wasn’t half bad. You could tell there were apples in there and the flavor was decent. They could definitely grow on me. It’s just a little shocking the first time you see it. Of course – think about it. we’re so used to eating foods with so many artificial ingredients to make them look good and feel good. Eventually we want them to taste good as well. This doesn’t dwell on appearances and I’m ok with that. I still plan to pick up some more on my next trip out. I don’t eat much meat at home, so – since I’m not really a fan of peanut butter (almonds and cashews rock though), this will be a good supplement to my diet.

    • Yeah – it was a rather thick blob-like- – – thing. I guess I was expecting something more along the lines of a Nutri-grain bar or something! Oh well – live and learn. It really wasn’t that bad though to be honest.
